The Babylon 5 Collectible Card Game (TM)
History

As the B5 CCG came out, all sorts of information became available along the way.  This is my attempt to capture what I feel are the interesting bits and put them down in writing to help my own memory.  If you find the information helpful or fun to read, then I'm glad it's here for you too.

Premier Edition (1997)

Stats
Starter Decks Approximately 50 cards - Fixed & Common
4 different decks - one per race
Each deck contains instructions and play sheet
Starter Bundles As an alternative to individual Starter Decks you could buy 2 starters together along with a couple of booster packs to get you started.  You could get either Human/Minbari or Narn/Centauri.
Booster Packs 8 cards per pack: 5 Common, 2 Uncommon, 1 Rare
$1.95 US per pack
24 packs per box
The Set 146 Fixed
100 Common
100 Uncommon
100 Rare

Some booster packs contained a Delenn Transformed card autographed by Mira Furlan.  Though this card didn't have a Precedence seal stamped on it, you can tell if it's a proper signed Delenn Transformed card by comparing the picture on the signed card with the picture on an unsigned one.  The original signed card was from the first pressing, and the image quality was improved before the production run for the Premier set.  You will notice that for a true signed card the image is much darker than it ended up on the unsigned rare card in the booster packs.  However Mira did keep some of the original cards and made some available for sale at conventions.

Some Starter Bundles also contained the Dr.Franklin promo card.

The Shadows (1998)

Stats
Booster Packs 12 cards per pack: 6 Common, 4 Uncommon, 2 Rare
$2.75 US per pack
18 packs per box
The Set 50 Common
53 Uncommon
100 Rare

Some booster packs contained a Mr.Morden card autographed by Ed Wasser.  This card has the Precedence seal stamped over the autograph to identify it from fakes.

In October 1998 Precedence had a promotion to boost the sales of this set.  If you bought 3 boxes of booster packs you got a special Lyta Empowered card signed by Patricia Tallman.

Deluxe Edition (November 1998)

The Deluxe Edition is a reprinting of the Premier Edition with corrections, some cards retired, and overall improvement in the picture quality on the cards.

Stats
Booster Packs 8 cards per pack: 1 Fixed, 4 Common, 2 Uncommon, 1 Rare
$1.95 US per pack
24 packs per box
The Set 85 Fixed
100 Common
100 Uncommon
95 Rare

One interesting note is a misprint on the master sheets.  The rare card As It Was Meant To Be had a correction to change it from an Agenda to a Major Agenda.  On the rare master sheet, the card appears twice so that they get 2 of them

There is a special insert Commander Ivonova card signed by Claudia Christian in random packs.

Each box of booster packs contains a sealed Rogue Telepath promo card.

Some cards have been retired:

The 5 Retired Rares:
Immortality Serum
Jason Ironheart
Jha'Dhur
The Eye
The Great Machine

Upgrade Defenses (Fixed)
Exploration (Common)

One Fixed card has been moved to the Common category: Contact With Vorlons

Only certain Fixed cards were reproduced.  Some, such as the Ambassadors and their Aides are not something you need duplicates of, so they weren't reprinted here.  14 Fixed cards were not reprinted.

Great War Expansion

This set hit the stores about a week before Christmas 1998, just before the due date of my second child. It's a good set of cards, but it wasn't what I was anticipating most around the time :-)

The new Starter Decks came out a couple of weeks after the boosters.

Each booster box included a Return to Ideals promo card.
Stats
Booster Packs 10 cards per pack: 5 Common, 3 Uncommon, 2 Rare
$2.49 US per pack
20 packs per box
Starter Decks 50 unique cards per deck
2 decks: Non-Aligned & Opposing Faction
$?.?? US per deck
The Set 100 Common
100 Uncommon
100 Rare

Psi Corps Expansion

This set finally arrived mid-August 1999 (originally scheduled for April '99).  It Sold Out quickly.

This set has 3 autographed cards inserted into booster decks:

There is a new 50 card Starter decks (Psi Corps) as well with Bester as the 'ambassador', plus 150 cards from the booster.

Each booster box included The Dreaming promo card.
Stats
Booster Packs 8 cards per pack: 5 Common, 2 Uncommon, 1 Rare
$1.99 US per pack
24 packs per box
Starter Decks 50 cards per deck
$?.?? US per deck
The Set 50 Common
50 Uncommon
50 Rare

The autograph cards in this series have one difference over the regular version of the cards.  The fine print at the bottom of each card says "Psi Corps" on the left side for the autograph cards, where it's on the right side for all others.

The "Psi Spies" promo that was supposed to be a mail in offer printed in the last of the Psi Corp Trilogy of books from Del Rey has been pushed back to the first book in the Centauri Trilogy.  The mail in form did not get printed in the PC book by accident.

Severed Dreams

Arrived in November 1999

This set has 3 autographed cards inserted into booster decks:

Each booster box should include a promo card.

Reference Guide is dead

This was originally called the Player's Guide and was due out in early 1999.  It was delayed, and renamed to Reference Guide and is was expected in September 1999.  Now it has been cancelled entirely.

It would have contained over 200 pages of revised rules, deck strategies, and "killer combos." The Babylon 5 Reference Guide was to be co-written by Men In Black creator Lowell Cunningham and CCG strategist Sandy Clark, best known for his deck building articles in many gaming industry magazines. The planned price was $19.95 US.

It was to include a mail-in offer for the "Spoo" promo card, which is now available only to Zeta Squadron members.

Masterpiece Collection is dead (May 1999 - originally for March)

The Masterpiece Collection will not happen.  On May 4, 1999 Precedence announced that they could not find a supplier for the Shadow Sentient figure they planned to ship with the Collection, and therefore were replacing the offering under a new name of Babylon 5 Collector's Set.

Since this is the History page, I'll leave the original information here for posterity.

The Masterpiece Collection is a set of 12 specially produced cards.  Here is the press release:

MASTERPIECE COLLECTION READIED FOR BABYLON 5 COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME

Precedence Entertainment in conjunction with Diamond Comics is releasing the Masterpiece Collection for the internationally popular Babylon 5 Collectible Card Game.  This very special limited edition set of game cards comes with an exclusive action figure crafted just for the collection, and other unique additions.  The production run has been limited to fill advance orders only, and will never be reprinted. Retailing at $79.99, the Babylon 5 Masterpiece Collection is scheduled to ship in January 1999.

The sets of 12 all-new rare cards are strikingly enhanced with gold embossed borders.  Each represents a pivotal moment or character from the Babylon 5 television series. Cards include "Valen," "Thirdspace," "Babylon 4," and "Emperor Mollari."  All of the new cards can be readily integrated into pre-existing decks to add even greater impact to the game.

In addition to these super-rare cards, the set features a limited edition action figure of a Shadow Sentient, the most nefarious foes of Babylon 5. This specially painted figure is exclusive to the Masterpiece Collection and is the tallest such figure produced to date at 6 1/2 inches. This is the figure the fans have been demanding!  Also included in the set are a card jacket, an embossed sheet with the official B5 logo, a reference poster for the card game, and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Precedence Entertainment produces the Babylon 5 Collectible Card Game, the StarLink telephone service, the Fortune Teller card game, and publishes books in the IMMORTAL universe.

See the Precedence web page for more Masterpiece Collection information.

The 12 card names are:

Valen Thirdspace Destroy Babylon 5
Transcendence Emperor Mollari Delenn the legend
Sheridan Starkiller G'Kar the Prophet The Great Maker
Babylon 4 League Spokesbeing Doomsday Weapon

In early April 1999, more delays were announced for the Masterpiece Collection.  The factory contracted to manufacture the Shadow Sentient figures closed down.  As a way of apology to customers, Precedence offered a free signed Lyta Empowered card to anyone who mailed in a copy of their receipt showing prepayment of the Masterpiece Collection of at least 25%.

Here's the announcment of the death of the Collection:

BABYLON 5 COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME MASTERPIECE COLLECTION REPLACED BY NEW BABYLON 5 COLLECTOR'S SET.

(Tempe, Arizona) Precedence Entertainment announced today that due to the continued unavailability of outsourced components scheduled for inclusion in the Masterpiece Collection, the product has been shelved to be replaced by a new product called the Babylon 5 Collector's Set.

To avoid any further delay, the new B5 Collector's Set will contain only items manufactured by Precedence, including the 12 gold-bordered and foil embossed cards originally scheduled for inclusion in the Masterpiece Collection.  These ultra-premium cards include the long awaited "Valen", "Sheridan Starkiller", "G'Kar the Prophet", "Emperor Mollari", and "Babylon 4".  The set will also contain an exclusive poster and a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. The entire set will be shrink-wrapped in an attractive folder.

The Babylon 5 Collector's Set is scheduled for August release and will retail for $39.99. Customers who pre-paid part or all of retail orders for the Masterpiece Collection are encouraged to contact their retailers to transfer deposits to the Babylon 5 Collector's Set.  Note that with the new set at half the price of Masterpiece, collectors can now own two sets for the same total cost.

Precedence is also honoring the prior announcement of 4/6/1999 to customers who prepaid for the Masterpiece Collection.  Anyone who can show proof of having prepaid at least 25% for the Masterpiece Collection may write to Precedence customer service at POB 28397, Tempe, AZ 85285 with a copy of their receipt to receive an ultra-rare signed "Lyta Empowered" card.

Precedence Entertainment produces the Babylon 5 Collectible Card Game, Fortune Teller, and the IMMORTAL series.  Forthcoming titles include the Tomb Raider Collectible Card Game (August) and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Collectible Card Game (October).

Babylon 5 Collector's Set (formerly the Masterpiece Collection)

The Masterpiece Collection has been replaced with the Babylon 5 Collector's Set.  See the announcement for the details on why and what it means to those who placed orders.

Rangers

The Rangers are a group of volunteers that help Precedence spread the B5 CCG word by holding demos and tournaments in cities across the world.

Zeta Squadron

The Zeta Squadron is kind of like a fan club.  It's a club run by Precedence for both players and collectors.  They put out a newsletter called The Agenda every couple of months.  Along with this newsletter, they usually include 2 free promo cards that have been out before but may have been difficult to locate.  Take a look at the Precedence web site for sign-up information.

The Hunt For Promos

One of the most frustrating and fun aspects of the B5 CCG (for collectors) is the hunt for the many promo cards that have been released.  I'll try to list every card and something interesting about each one.  You can click on some of the card titles to see a scan of the card.

Lack of Direction
(recalled version)
This card was included in Volume 2, Issue 1 of Babylon 5 Magazine from the UK (distributed in North America for the first time).  It is a fake.  The text below the image is bolder than the real card, and if you hold it up to the light you can see the card back through it. The image quality is also inferior to the real one. Precedence will replace this card with a real one if you like.
